ABOUT THE WINE
In 1964, Jim Barry purchased 70 acres of land two kilometres northwest of Clare in South Australia. He planted a little 8-acre patch of Shiraz vines in the winter of 1968. In 1985, the Australian wine industry was on its knees. Everyone wanted Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. In Clare there was a vine pull. Beautiful old Shiraz and Riesling vines, that the region’s grandfathers had planted, were worthless. Jim realised that this unique patch of vineyard had some of the best Shiraz fruit in Clare. So, when everyone else was pulling their vines out, he decided to make a great Australian Shiraz, with the vision to make a wine that defined Clare. The Armagh Shiraz was born. Blessed with truly great fruit and plenty of winemaking knowledge, in the 30 years of The Armagh to date, there have only ever been 3 vintages deemed unworthy of release.

1989: 93 Punkte
"The 1989 Shiraz The Armagh, now 35 years old, is hanging in there and retaining vibrancy, possessing supple red cherry and raspberry aromas in an elegant frame. The palate takes on a more savory feel with earthy, spicy tones, maintaining overall freshness before winding down over a long, silky finish." - Angus Hughson (06/2024)

1994: 94 Punkte
"The rich and developed 1994 Shiraz The Armagh is in peak condition, boasting reserved mulberry aromas that are now matched by a strong serve of secondary baked earth, tobacco and dried sage complexity. It's richly textured, soft and welcoming, with a gentle grip over a lengthy finish. While just starting to fade, the 1995 will remain attractive until 2030." - Angus Hughson (06/2024)

1999: 95 Punkte
"The mature but still vibrant 1999 Shiraz The Armagh radiates blackberry, cherry compote, Australian bush and peppery notes, with the oak just a little prominent. It's at peak thanks to a beautifully supple and evocative palate, with fine tannins supporting a long, savory and complex finish. The 1999 is excellent and has plenty of staying power." - Angus Hughson (06/2024)

"Very complex, mature shiraz nose with notes of soot and a slew of spices. Excellent ripeness and a wonderfully silky texture on the concentrated and enveloping, yet finely nuanced palate. Very long, velvety finish. Drink or hold." (10/2022)

1994: 93 Punkte
"A spicy rendition that has some dried mushrooms and ripe blackberries on the nose, as well as dark plums and spicy, earthy notes. The palate has ample density and depth with such impressive, smooth, fine tannin and a long, central tannin drive at the finish. Drink or hold." (06/2020)

1999: 98 Punkte
"A very intense, complex and savory-tinged nose with undertones of tar, toasted brown spices and plenty of blackberries. The palate is very fleshy, really succulent, bold and long, showing immense power and deep plum and fruit-paste flavors. Licorice, too. It still manages such poise with great density and focus. Black-fruit finish. Drink or hold." (06/2020)

"Rich, dense and seductive for its layers and layers of fruit, packing in the ripe cherry, plum, berry and spice flavors, all tightly wound and waiting for more to come with cellaring." - Harvey Steiman (09/2002)

"The 1989 Shiraz The Armagh is sealed under cork. It leads with cocoa nib, licorice bullets, layers of mulberry and star anise on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is super soft, fine, mineral and spiced. It's not heavy or big but ethereal and soft. The length of fruit through the finish is unwavering and littered with raspberry and red berries. Pretty pretty. There is still a core of fruit here, but it’s very ready to drink now. How much further, just a ways down the road. It has 14.5% alcohol and matured for 13 months in 100% new American oak barriques (225 liters)." - Erin Larkin (05/2023)

"So different (in the context of the tasting so far)! This 1999 Shiraz The Armagh has Christmas cake spice, orange zest, some quince, date, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and choc bullets. In the mouth, the wine is fresh, the tannins moving to firm and steely—almost mineral. There are notes of graphite, clove bud and peat/lichen/moss. This is super good, but decant it—it really needs to blossom. It has 15.1% alcoho and, matured for 15 months in 50% French and 50% American oak barriques (225 liters). This bottle was a magnum and sealed under cork." - Erin Larkin (05/2023)
