Vinous

88 POINTS
(95% merlot) Saturated purple color. Cassis, licorice, minerals and a floral note of violet pastille on the nose. Dense but juicy, with highly aromatic flavors of black fruits and bitter chocolate. Firm acidity buffers the wine's moderate sweetness. Finishes firmly tannic, with a slight medicinal quality. Made by Louis Mitjavile for a property that owns a parcel of vines just below Le Tertre Roteboeuf.

Lots of smoky, berry and chocolate character in this one. Medium-bodied, with good fruit and a pretty, delicate, silky-textured finish. This is a new château for me. And it made a very good 2001. Best after 2007. 500 cases made. (03/2004)

One of the most attractively priced of the so-called garage wines of St.-Emilion, this is always a sexy, heady effort offering a concoction of melted chocolate, jammy black cherry fruit, cassis, licorice, and smoke. The 2001 exhibits notions of cherry liqueur, chocolate, and espresso roast. It is an expressive, lush, savory wine to drink now and over the next 10-12 years.
