The 2011 Promontory is just starting to enter its first plateau of maturity. Dark, dense and layered, the 2011 is striking. Dark cherry, gravel, scorched earth, tobacco, spice and licorice build with some coaxing. The late harvest gave the 2011 an exotic flair that is impossible to miss.

Deep garnet in color, the 2011 Promontory tumbles out with forthcoming notes of baked plums and blackcurrant preserves leading to hints of sandalwood, fertile loam, rusty nails, and wild fungi with a hint of dried bay leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate vibrates with spritely black fruit and minerally layers supported by firm, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long with a real skip in its step. The 2011 Promontory exhibits a dense purple color, more density and richness than I predicted from barrel, a big, sweet nose of licorice, scorched earth, espresso bean, camphor and sweet blackcurrants and blackberries. A Graves-like volcanic character is also present. Rich, full-bodied and in need of 3-4 years of cellaring (unusual for a 2011), it should drink well for two decades or more.
