"Tannins beginning to melt and soften, showing grilled smoky edge, black tea, olive tapenade, concentrated and powerful with lavender, mint, forest floor, beginning of tertiary in the best way, liquorice, walnut and toast. Tasted twice. 3.3ha estate, Sam Barry winemaker. Late release." (07/2026)

"Fragrant and totally captivating on the nose, so beautifully scented - a nose to fall in love with - earthy with red berry fruits and soft fragranced flowers. Supple, almost thick on the palate but still with energy and movement. Richly textured and mouthfilling - almost a soft chew to the fruit - you're getting a lot of wine here, but it retains elegance and charm with a mouthwatering core. Tannins are slightly powdery with touches of cherry, rose petal, strawberry as well as mint and sage herbs. Focussed, fresh and dramatic with intensity and character. Excellent minerality too ending the flavours on a wet stone note. Incredible." - Georgina Hindle (02/2024)

Falstaff: 97 Punkte

- Anne Krebiehl (09/2022)

Deeply colored and flavored, the full-throttle 2016 Shiraz The Armagh delivers a rich and impressive core of blackberry, chocolate, blueberry, cloves, earth, eucalypt and dried spices wrapped up in a cloak of oak. Immense fruit concentration follows with a freight train of sweet oak and immaculately balanced drying tannins, building up to a massive finish. The 2016 is big and deeply expressive.

Wow. This is a bold, brassy shiraz that carries a wealth of very intense aromas of ripe blackberries, dark plums, licorice and sweetly spiced earth. Still so very youthful and primary. The palate is so powerful, so mouth-filling and so, so juicy. This manages to deliver such intensity and composure. Supple, long and deep-set tannins and heroically expressive fruit. Really impressive now, but this will deliver much more over the next two decades. One of the finest releases to date. (06/2020)

The 2016 The Armagh Shiraz, tasted in a lineup of four vintages (2016 - 2019), has the highest alcohol of the lot (14.2% alcohol) and remains perfectly in balance. These are not the big wines that we may expect them to be. The vintage variation across them is subtle but evident, revealing the beauty of this single vineyard, planted in 1968. This 2016 wine is now starting to settle into its first drinking window and speaks of an array of deli meats, forest berries, exotic spice and even a hint of red curry paste. This has all the complexity you could want, and in terms of tannins: texture, density and rippling muscles. Sensational stuff. Drink it over the next two decades.
