93 POINTS

The 2018 Vieux Château Mazerat is laced with inky dark fruit, chocolate, graphite, blackberry jam and cloves. This is an especially flamboyant style, but there is plenty of energy, too, and that makes for a compelling Saint-Émilion loaded with personality. Like all of the wines in Jonathan Maltus' range, Vieux Château Mazerat is exuberant, but it is more medium in body and less overtly juicy than the top selections.

Aromas of crushed berries, pomegranate, walnuts, cedar and dried spices. It’s full-bodied with firm, chalky tannins. Creamy and polished with a long, chewy finish. Try from 2025. (01/2021)

Normally one of the sexier, more opulent wines in the lineup from Maltus, the 2018 Vieux Château Mazerat checks in as 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc that was vinified and aged in 80% new French oak. It's slightly more restrained in 2018, yet still brings beautiful fruit and richness. Deep purple/ruby-hued, with a brooding bouquet of blackcurrants, dark chocolate, candied orange, sandalwood, and violets, it's another wine from this estate that blossoms beautifully with air and already has complex, layered aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied 2018 with ripe, chalky tannins, a layered, focused texture, serious mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This gorgeous wine needs 4-6 years of bottle age and is going to evolve for two decades or more. (03/2021)

Composed of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Vieux Chateau Mazerat is deep garnet-purple in color. It slowly expands on the nose to offer fragrant scents of dried roses, Chinese five spice, and crushed rocks, over a core of baked plums, dried mulberries, and raspberry leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a chewy texture and loads of minerally sparks among the black fruit preserves layers, finishing earthy. Some of the Cabernet Franc vines were planted in 1947 on clay over limestone, and the vineyard is surrounded by Canon on 3 sides and Angelus on the other. (05/2022)

Fresh and rounded in feel, with raspberry and plum compote flavors. Light anise and mineral accents emerge on the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Vieux Château Mazerat is from the JCP Maltus portfolio of skillfully crafted Saint-Émilion wines. Neil White is the head winemaker, and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here. This vineyard is bordered by Château Canon on three sides and by Angélus on the fourth side. It includes a parcel of Cabernet Franc that was planted in 1947 on clay over limestone. A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Vieux Château Mazerat storms out of the glass with powerful black fruit notes of stewed plums, blackberry pie and boysenberries, giving way to wafts of underbrush, spice cake, kirsch and potpourri. The rich, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with black and red fruit preserves, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with loads of spicy sparks.
