For anyone who has kept a keen eye on Yalumba, this is the brand’s big wine to watch. Much has changed since this big-framed Barossa Shiraz was first introduced in 1990, with winemaker Kevin Glastonbury altering the oak regime significantly, reducing the amount and varieties of new oak barrels. It enjoys long, slow maturation – over 19 months in 25% new French hogsheads and barriques, with the balance in older French 100-litre octave (eight-stave) barrels – which helps settle the heft of this stern old-vine fruit. Its strong body has muscular blackberry and myriad shades from the black fruit spectrum – black plums, cherries and dark chocolate – with high aromatic puffs of clove and violets. Held in check by a tight line of ironstone tannins and firm oak, but still supple enough to roll enticingly on the palate. - David Sly (04/2025)

This stylish 2019 The Octavius, which is a blend of 55% Eden and 45% Barossa Shiraz, is beautifully layered with initial aromas of violets, sage and white pepper followed by a rich vein of focused licorice. Sturdily, and tightly bound with powdery tannins, a superb mix of bright fruit pastille and dark earthy flavors are underpinned by wood smoke. Immensely complex and energetic, held tight and compact through to a finish of extreme length. This is benchmark Barossa Shiraz.

Really expressive, with aromas of violets, bark, warm stones and blackberries with a touch of dried herbs. Deep and concentrated but graceful, sensibly crafted with firm tannins that turn velvety. Vibrant dark fruit flavors conclude in an elegant finish. Already drinkable, but will improve with a couple of years of cellaring.

Aromatic and complex, offering a mix of cardamom, black pepper, Szechuan peppercorn, and fleshy huckleberry and blackberry notes. Earl Grey, cigar box and dried herbal accents are there to support on the long finish, as is a touch of fruity dark chocolate as the tannins firm up. Drink now through 2037. 200 cases imported.

The 2019 The Octavius was first made in 1990 and has always been the Old Vine Shiraz for Yalumba. It is a blend of vineyards in both Barossa and Eden Valleys. The oldest vineyard to feature in this wine was planted in 1854, plus 1901, 1920 and the 1940s and 1950s. This is powerful and supple, savory and inky, layered with crushed rocks, black licorice tannins, dark chocolate and game. The oak is wholly French oak in this vintage, but the history of the wine is embedded in the use of Yalumba-coopered American oak octaves (100 liter barrels). Hence, the name. This is looking excellent today, dark yet fresh, complex, layered, silty and long. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. - Erin Larkin (07/2025)
