"Owned by the Vayron family since 1840, Bourgneuf is now in its eighth generation. Frédérique Vayron and her sister Marie have been at the helm alongside their parents Xavier and Dominique since 2008, bringing a fresh yet respectful approach. The estate occupies an enviable position on the Pomerol plateau, right next door to Château Trotanoy, with three distinct soil types ranging from dense, iron-rich clays to clay-sand and gravel. It consistently offers strong quality-to-value in the appellation. Georgie Hindle: Soft dried herbs with cool blueberry. A gentle, nicely grippy style, letting the ripe fruit do the talking. Blackcurrant and cherry, a lick of salty, minty minerality. Yummy. Arthur Coggill: Dried red berry fruit, lacquer and wood spice. Smooth with bright acidity, dried damson and redcurrant. Grippy and mouthfilling tannins, drying the back palate. Tom King: Understated at first. Warm ripeness without excess. Rich, with fine, velvety tannin and ripe fruit that fills every corner. Almost ready, yet with potential." - Georgie Hindle, Arthur Coggill, Tom King (05/2026)

The 2020 Bourgneuf has closed up a little on the nose post-bottling: blackberry, graphite, subtle loamy aromas and just a whiff of sea spray. Fine delineation and commendable complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, quite structured and perhaps more "serious" than its showing from barrel. Generous helpings of cracked black pepper enliven the second half, firm grip with a very nicely proportioned finish. This is an excellent Bourgneuf that should give 20+ years of drinking pleasure.

A juicy and linear Pomerol with blackberries, chocolate and hazelnut, but very subtle. Sexy at the same time. Full-bodied with creamy tannins and a savory finish. Dense and layered. Better after 2025 when it opens. (2023)

Rocking levels of ripe black fruits, smoked tobacco, chocolate, camphor, and spicy oak emerge from the 2020 Château Bourgneuf, and it's a medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, balanced Pomerol that comes in on the richer, more mouth-filling side of the vintage. It's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age but is one sexy, pleasure-bent beauty I'd be happy to have in the cellar. My note finished with "love it." (2021)

Friendly and open up front, with kirsch, plum gelée and blackberry mixed with wood spice, dark tobacco and savory notes, which add a chunky feel to the finish. Shows good energy, though, and is an admirable effort in the vintage. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2034. 1,800 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Bourgneuf sashays out of the glass with expressive notes of crushed black cherries, boysenberries and prunes, plus wafts of melted chocolate, Indian spices and cedar chest, with a hint of cardamom. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of spicy/peppery black fruit preserves, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and earthy.
