Syrah's ethereally floral, ferrous perfume is on full display in this fine-footed yet concentrated Syrah. Blackberry and cherry flavours are penetrating and crisp, plumed with rose petals and freshly picked violets, but with hints of fur and leather, too. It's a lavish, delightfully textured wine with fine-grained, furry tannins and a long, piercing finish.

The 2021 Syrah Annika Bien Nacido, from the famed X Block, is wonderfully translucent and elegant. Lavender, mint, spice, rose petal and red/bluish fruits all run through this delicate, understated Syrah. X Block Syrah is rarely this finessed. At times, the 2021 displays decidedly Pinot-like leanings.

The 2021 Syrah Anika isn't your typical California Syrah. Although neither Sashi Moorman nor Raj Paar would call it "natural"—a highly contentious term—winemaking is minimal, and it has low to no sulfur at bottling. It has scents of red cherry, powdered sugar, pipe tobacco, leather and herbal undertones. The medium-bodied palate is framed by finely chalky tannins and fireworks of fresh acidity, and it has a long, nuanced finish. It's delicious despite its somewhat funky style. 153 cases were made.
