2021 Rosso di Montalcino

Distinctly savory, the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with a dark and earthy blend of flowery underbrush and balsam herbs, giving way to dried black cherries. This is surprisingly energetic and spry, with depths of tart red berry fruits enlivened by a core of zesty acidity. Its minerality comes forward through the finish, mixing with nuances of lavender and plum. The 2021 tapers off structured and long yet still remarkably fresh. This is a Rosso who dreamt of being a Brunello. Very nice.

The 2021 Rosso Di Montalcino was bottled in 2023 and is going to be released in May or June of 2025. Taking on a bit more pigment in this vintage and pouring a ruby/red color, it opens to aromas of darker berries, ripe black cherries, crushed herbs, violets, and rocky earth. The palate has good extract, concentration, and sapidity, with very nice elegance, ripe tannins, and a mouthwatering, crunchy finish. This structured Rosso will age well over the coming 12-15 years. This 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is not a "baby Brunello;" this is a serious wine in its own right. Textured, with silty compact tannins, it has a beautiful taut ripeness. The tense acidity lifts the crunchy red fruits, and the wine has a shimmery finish of hibiscus tea and fragrant soil. It's hard to resist. It is decided in the cellar at Biondi-Santi which wines are destined to become part of the Rosso, then the remaining wines will age for an additional year before deciding which lots are to become Normale and which are to become Riserva.

This is an epic vintage that has been expertly interpreted by the Biondi-Santi winemaking team. The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino has impressive complexity and finesse, the result of many complicated blending decisions. The wine remains on the shy side at the moment and will need a few more years of bottle age before its full bouquet comes into focus. The wine is essentially linear and sharp with firm structure, seething energy and bright red fruit. The vintage was warm, dry and luminous. The Sangiovese harvest started on the 9th of September.
