The 2022 Insignia is one of the highlights of this extremely challenging vintage. Winemaker Ashley Hepworth leaned into the cooler sites in the Phelps portfolio; most of the fruit is from Banca Dorada in Yountville and Las Rocas in Stags Leap, both cooler sites that fared better in a year marked by intense, sustained late-season heat. There is a bit of edginess in the tannin I have not seen in the past, but that is consistent with a very hot year in which ideal ripening was simply not possible. This is a relatively supple Insignia that will drink well with minimal cellaring.
