Falstaff: 92 Punkte

"Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate notes of licorice, black forest berries, some nougat, inviting bouquet. Juicy, dark cherries, ripe tannins, chocolate touch on the finish, lingers, needs some time." - Peter Moser (04/2026)

Yves Beck: 94-96 Punkte

2030-2050" (04/2026)

Jane Anson: 93 Punkte

"Intense plum colour, and this is an estate that knows how to find ripeness. Skilful extraction giving a firm tannic architecture, with lots of black cherry and cassis fruits. Intense, charged, espresso and cocoa, with estate signature. Harvest September 13 to 19. 25 hl/ha. 30% new oak, 40th vintage of the estate, and the last one of Michel Rolland." (04/2026)

Decanter: 93 Punkte

"True to its style, this wine showcases polished aromas of both ripe fruit and oak-derived toast that introduce a rather rich yet dry and tonic palate of blackberry and juicy plum fruit. Over the years, the new oak percentage has come down, in this case 30%, and the wine has improved, showing more fruit, but fans of its oaky style will enjoy this just as much, as you get toasty notes throughout along with the ripe fruit and freshness on the finish."

Vinum: 91 Punkte

"Wie oft mit markanter Toastnote vom Holz, dahinter dunkle Beeren; weicher, leicht cremiger Gaumenauftakt, saftig, mit markanten Tanninen, die Qualität ist hochwertig, die Länge stimmt; braucht etwas Reife, um den Holzeinsatz zu verdauen". - Adrian van Velsen (04/2026)

The 2025 Fontenil comes across quite poised on the nose, with attractive blueberry and plummy scents, becoming quite floral in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with an intense, quite sweet entry, showy at first, though it shows decent restraint on the finish. Two samples were quite different from each other; I preferred the one poured at Rolland Labs, which I felt was more representative.

Medium- to full-bodied with silky, delicate dark fruit and chalky tannins. Plush and reserved. Extremely well crafted. (04/2026)

A serious, sexy wine that readers should seek out in just about every vintage, the 2025 Château Fontenil offers blacker fruits, roasted herbs, chocolate, and spicy nuances on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's focused and balanced, with fine tannins, wonderful purity, and a great finish. Based on 100% Merlot that's being raised in 30% new French oak with the balance in amphora, due to tiny yields this vintage, the grapes that would normally go into the Delfi cuvée have been folded into this classic château release. This smoking good Fronsac will shine right out of the gate yet should have 20 years or more of prime drinking. (05/2026)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2025 Fontenil is a little closed to start, offering notes of cedar chest and tar before opening out to a core of plum preserves, Indian spices, and wild sage, plus a fragrant touch of lavender. The big, concentrated, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with baked black fruits and exotic spice layers, supported by velvety tannins and a lively line, finishing long and fragrant. (04/2026)
