"Luscious blue and black fruits on the nose, layered through with liqourice and toasted almond, along with creme patisserie giving that Thunevin gourmet twist. At the 10 years on point, the finesse of clay limestone soils are starting to come through, giving the promise of slow, steady ageing, with the patina of smooth tannins one decade on. Good quality." "Dive in to this lovely Valandraud, textured and rippled with fleshy red fruits and limestone fingerprints, austere in all the right places, opulent where you want it to be. Great stuff, leans into the vintage and shows its joy. Jean-Luc Thunevin owner, 100% new oak for ageing." (02/2025)

"Medium to full ruby in colour, the notes here are fully ripe from the opening moments, touches oi soy, espresso, damson puree, cherry pie crust, incense, sandalwood, tobacco, grilled oak. This is exceptional quality, in a closed spot right now, give it another few years to come back out of it. Jean-Luc Thunevin estate." (01/2026)

"The 2014 Valandraud has been a little inconsistent bottle-to-bottle in recent years. Darker fruit than its peers, the new oak is nicely integrated. Touches of mint and undergrowth seep through with aeration. There's a bit of chutzpah. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins that lend this Saint-Émilion a fleshier, more corpulent mouthfeel. Moving into secondary flavors, it offers white pepper and graphite notes, slightly ferrous and Pomerol-like toward the finish, where I discern just a little dryness that comes with maturity (this austerity seemed accentuated at the subsequent Southwold tasting where it was served blind). This is a Right Bank that feels more evolved vis-à-vis six years ago, and I temper my score accordingly. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On tasting." - Neal Martin (02/2024)

"The 2015 Valandraud has long been one of my favourite vintages of Jean-Luc Thunévin, and six years on from my previous encounter, it remains a gorgeous wine. It is packed with black cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, still youthful, especially here, juxtaposed against its peers. Quite intense, but there is pedigree. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, almost Napa-like entry that admittedly denudes it of some typicité—certainly not a "classic" style of Saint-Émilion. But the oak is seamlessly subsumed and there is a precision on the finish that cannot be denied. Superb. Just starting to drink now, but it will continue to deliver for many years." - Neal Martin (02/2025)

"The 2016 Valandraud is inky black in color. It has a very pure, precocious bouquet of intense black cherries mixed with cassis and blueberry, but after a couple of minutes’ aeration it develops more refinement and harmony. The palate is medium-bodied, offering supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and great precision on the persistent finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting." - Neal Martin (01/2020)

"Wow. The blackberry, licorice and blueberry aromas are really spellbinding. Full-bodied, chewy and polished with beautiful fruit. Super depth and richness. Always subtle and polished behind the power. Try in 2023." (0172017)

"Plenty of toasty oak and extract here. This has immensely concentrated fruits with powerful yet silky tannins. Blackberry and dark-plum aromas dominate the nose with hints of dark chocolate and candied orange. Flavors follow suit amid fluid, muscular tannins that hold long into the finish. Great wine. Try from 2023." (01/2018)

"Incredible perfumes and beauty with ripe plum and berry character, as well as an array of spices, such as nutmeg and cinnamon. Full-bodied, firm and silky with beautifully polished tannins. Rendered and defined. A wine with lovely, classy nature and personality. One of the best Valandrauds I have tasted at this stage. Try from 2026." (01/2019)

"The 2014 Valandraud from Saint-Emilion superstar Jean-Luc Thunevin is certainly up with the crème de la crème of the vintage, and while I can be a little humdrum with regards to 2014, this is one of the few that will cause your heart rate to jump. A deep purple/ruby color is accompanied by a terrific perfume of ripe black cherries, blackberries, Asian spices, decaying flowers and hints of tobacco. Deep, layered, full-bodied, and tannic, it needs to be forgotten for at least 4-5 years and will keep for two decades. It’s one of the few “do not miss” wines in 2014." (11/2017)

"A wine that will be a candidate for perfection at maturity, the 2015 Valandraud is a heavenly wine that exhibits a deep, saturated ruby/purple color as well as a sensational bouquet of blackcurrants, cassis, crème caramel, graphite, and chocolate. This full-bodied, expansive, super concentrated 2015 is a hedonistic dream and has exceptional purity, balance, and equilibrium. While it offers pleasure today, it needs short-term cellaring and will keep for 20+ years." (11/2017)

"Including 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot-dominated 2016 Château Valandraud is a brilliant example of this cuvée that should match or exceed the incredible 2015 at maturity. Brought up all in new oak, its deep purple color is followed by a powerful bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, smoked earth, and hints of earth. Possessing full-bodied richness, thrilling purity of fruit, ripe tannins, and just about perfect balance, it's another tour de force from the incredibly talented Jean-Luc Thunevin. It's slightly more elegant than the L'Interdit de Valandraud cuvée and will benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for two decades or more." (02/2019)

"The 2014 Valandraud is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. Notes of unsmoked cigars and smoked meats waft from the glass, followed by hints of black cherry compote and plum preserves with a touch of bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate has a firm backbone of rounded tannins and plenty of freshness to support the generous, mature fruit, finishing long and spicy." (02/2024)

"The 2015 Valandraud is medium to deep garnet colored. It prances out with flamboyant notes of plum pudding, blackberry preserves, mocha, and violets, plus suggestions of cracked black pepper and licorice. Big, concentrated, and full-bodied, the fruit is still very youthful and there is a little oak poking through, delivering firm, chewy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and opulent." "Big and fruity, intense and dense, Valandraud offers a peppery, strong nose with dark fruits, spiciness and lots of stamina and power. It is a powerful encounter almost resembling the style of wine you find in Pavie. The taste is intense and dark with notes of charcoal, lead pencil and rubber and is very impressive. Even though this wine is massive, you can actually enjoy it now with a few house decanting time." - Ivar Bjurner (01/2026)

"Delivers a gorgeous display of fruit, with boysenberry, raspberry and blackberry coulis notes that are fresh and racy, allied to a graphite spine and framed judiciously with a well-singed apple wood accent. This has a lot of coiled-up energy." - James Molesworth (03/2017)

"Melted licorice, plum sauce and blackberry puree notes flow through here, with ample but velvety structure running underneath. Alluring ganache, violet and tobacco accents add nuance on the finish. Long and beguiling, featuring echoing fruit and a captivating mouthfeel." - James Molesworth (03/2018)

"This is a full display of fruit, with raspberry preserve, plum reduction and creamed boysenberry notes streaming through in lockstep, while light bramble and singed vanilla accents happily take a back seat throughout. An echo of chalky minerality at the very end adds refinement and length." - James Molesworth (03/2019)

"Having tasted the 2014 Valandraud blind as part of a complete vertical in December, you may ask what is the point in revisiting it a manner of weeks afterwards? Well, Jean-Luc submitted three or four bottles to subsequent tastings, so I feel that I should honor his participation by saying that these vindicated the showing back in December. There remains that exuberance on the nose with layers of blackberry and blueberry, the palate still sumptuous and stocked, full of dense black cherry and cassis fruit. It could have been pushed too far, but it pulls everything back on the finish to retain the detail and freshness you expect. Tasted February 2017." - Neal Martin (03/2017)

"The 2015 Valandraud is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with a profound nose of baked cherries, warm black plums, blueberry preserves and smoked meats with tilled earth, mocha, Indian spices and dried herbs nuances plus a touch of licorice. The mouth is big, full-bodied and powerful with notable, velvety tannins and it is packed with savory and spice flavor layers, finishing with epic length. This big-boned, voluptuous, Rubenesque beauty will blow hedonists' minds!" - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (02/2018)
