2021 Riise Jovian

The 2021 Jovian is a different beast with its Tempranillo-dominated nose of red and black fruits, spice, sandalwood, and peppery herb-driven aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied red that's concentrated, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, tons of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age but will cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars. The blend is 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petit Sirah, 15% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, from the Four Hearts, Paderewski, Full Draw, and ONX Vineyards, and it was completely destemmed and spent 26 months in 60% new French oak. The 2021 Jovian is a co-fermented blend of 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Grenache and 5% Syrah. It is a successful, modern expression of Paso Robles Tempranillo, which can often take on either an overly rustic or overly polished form. The nose opens with a medley of red and black fruits lifted by dried herbal accents and petrichor aromas. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with considerable tannic grip. It concludes with a serious, structured, sturdy finish of intense but precise tannins, welcomely filled in by its ripe, layered fruit profile. This will take a few years to integrate and become approachable, but it is very well executed, as with the rest of the Riise roster. - Matthew Luczy (09/2024)
